Shashank Swaminathan

Shashank started learning karate at FSDC in 2012, along with his sister. With the help of the skilled instructors at the dojo, he quickly moved up. He soon became a certified instructor in the summer of 2012. He tested for his first degree black belt in 2014, at the age of 15. In March, 2017, he became an adult 3rd degree black belt (Sensei).

He has attended multiple local and national karate competitions, taking first place for kata in his division twice at IHOF National Tournaments, plus two third place finishes; first, second, and third place finishes at KIAI National Competitions in various years; and a third at the 2013 IWKA World Competition.

Apart from karate, he likes to be part of the various clubs in his school, such as the Math club, the Competition Debate club, Japanese club (Treasurer), the Novi Youth Council (Committee Chair), and the Varsity Quiz Bowl Team (Vice President). He also likes to pursue interests outside of school such as playing the flute (principal flute in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Philharmonic), Indian Classical Drums, and singing.
