Ben Matas

Ben has been training in Isshinryu Karate since 2010 and earned his black belt in August 2015 and his second degree black belt in March 2017. He has trained exclusively with the Family Self Defense Center Dojo under Master Z and Master Chris Szelap. Ben has been a certified instructor for the dojo, instructing lower ranks, since 2013.

Ben has competed in many local, state and national tournaments, and has earned over 45 top three finishes in his career. Included in these top finishes are two grand championship wins in 2015. He competed on the international level in the 2013 World Isshinryu Championships, in which he placed in kumite. One of his most memorable moments from this World tournament was meeting and having his picture taken with O’Sensei Kichiro Shimabuku.

The Isshinryu Hall of Fame recognized him as one of the top five for Male Karate Ka of the year (under 12) in 2014, and one of the top five for Male Karate Ka of the year (13-17) in 2018.

He has been recognized as a leader in his school, having been consistently rewarded with outstanding marks and recognition for his contributions from the school staff. Ben regularly volunteers for extracurricular activities, and is active in the school band as a percussionist.

In his spare time, Ben enjoys playing basketball and lacrosse. When he cannot be outside, he relaxes by developing his magic skills with playing cards. He also enjoys staying active in his church and attending activities with friends.
